My wife received a Toshiba Satellite laptop as a hand-me-down gift a few years ago. This laptop is now about eight years old and wearing out, so for her birthday this year I researched economically priced laptops and was very pleased one of her best options turned out to be this Toshiba Satellite (L675D-S7014, to be exact).
I located this laptop new for a really low price that just crested the 0 mark. I was unable to locate a new laptop with 17.3″ monitor, dual core, and 4Gb of memory for this price. Needless to say, I snapped it up and gave it to her for her birthday.
She squealed with delight when she opened it! She immediately took it out of the box and admired its beauty. It looks modern and sleek and while it’s actually a large computer, it’s not overly heavy. Her old 17″ square-monitor laptop was at least 15 lbs. This 17.3″ is under 10 lbs. In the past she would never use the laptop on her lap on our couch. It was just too heavy and hot. Now she does. The bottom of the laptop never gets past being warm and the laptop itself is very light compared to her old one.
Setup was as simple as turning on the laptop and walking through some questions. Upon its first power on, it installed and activated the OS build with only a few questions. Windows 7 is so simple to get started, but if you have a wireless LAN setup, make sure you have the wireless activation key. Windows will ask for this when installing the OS. Within maybe 10 minutes after power up she was on our wireless network Facebooking, e-mailing, and so happily working away. I couldn’t be happier with this laptop.
Really the only improvement I would suggest would be the sound quality of the speakers, but this is a nit. Really, for the price, this is a great laptop. The sound is in stereo with ample volume, but it’s a little tinny. I really have no reason to complain. It’s such a nice laptop, speedy, and has just the right amount of memory for everything she does. I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a low-priced, new laptop at a budget price.
In fact, I’m looking at one of the 18.4″ Toshiba laptops for myself. I’m so impressed with this one and the robust performance of her last Toshiba Satellite, which lasted eight years, I think I’ll get myself a Toshiba when I’m ready to retire my current Lenovo. For the price, you gotta love it!

I do a lot of multi-threaded graphics & GUI programming work for research, and have high standards regarding the machine that I work on. My purchase of this laptop was the end result of a 4-month long process of searching, reviewing & comparing. As the owner of a Toshiba Satellite (which I’ve used for over 6 years), I was looking for a laptop that promised to be as sturdy, reliable, affordable & a joy to use.
The following were my purchasing criteria:
(1) It ABSOLUTELY MUST have a big screen! – Between my 17-inch Satellite & 15/14/13-inch laptops from various sources, nothing beats a big screen when it comes to simultaneously viewing & working in multiple code windows.
(2) A modern Multi-core CPU – For my needs, I wanted a multi-core CPU that fell on the border between mid-range & high-end that was based on a recent CPU architecture. Not-so-good experiences with AMD knocked their products out, affordability removed the Core-i7s from the table, and I don’t see any difference between a Core-i3 & a Core 2 Duo. Anyways, what is more important to me is….
(3) An excellent GPU! – All of my software projects require a rock-solid GPU backed by highly stable driver support. The factors that eliminated any ATI choice were – a) My work with OpenGL/CUDA/OpenCL, b) My target users are more likely to have nVidia cards, c) nVidia’s SDKs & dev tools are more feature-rich & robust, IMHO, d) I’ve been using nVidia for the past 12 years, and e) I’m a casual gamer – I don’t care if an ATI card can play a game 10 fps faster than what I have, at whatever high resolution that I cannot use anyway; also I don’t care about 3DMark scores etc.
(4) Other requirements – I generally wanted at least 4 GB RAM, at least 1/2 TB of disk space, a DVD drive that opens/loads sideways & 4 USB ports. Don’t care about Bluetooth, 1080p HD, Blu-Ray, back-lit keyboard etc.
I have been using the Qosmio for a month now; the following are the plus points:
(1) Excellent CPU/GPU combination for programming – My program compile times are down by 70%! My software often needs to invoke & interact with multiple instances of other executables – I can smoothly run thrice as many external program instances. There’s also a lot of heavyweight OpenGL processing in my software – again, the end performance is nearly three times better. Also good for CUDA/OpenCL – just 413 GFlops, 96 CUDA cores & non-Fermi, but the best deal for this price.
(2) The big screen absolutely ROCKS!
(3) Even though it weighs 9.5 lbs, its shape & texture make it quite comfortable to carry around.
(4) Excellent for casual gaming.
(5) Great for movies – especially Netflix online viewing in fullscreen mode.
(6) Very low machine noise – No hard disk grinding, DVD whining is low, the GPU fan(s) come on only when gaming, and the sound is not loud or unpleasant.
(7) The next-day delivery was AWESOME; the UPS guy actually waited for 2 mins. after knocking on my door, which was a very pleasant surprise. The laptop was not left on the doorstep – good job UPS & Amazon!
The following are the cons:
(1) Fingerprint magnet – I read other reviews about this, but they were understatements. The laptop has to be thoroughly wiped down at least once a day. I’m looking at this in a positive light, as now I’m forced to clean it regularly; so there’s no dust buildup or dirt accumulation in any hard to reach corners etc.
(2) Weird/bad design for power cord plug to laptop – Instead of the simple plug that I’m used to, the plug to the laptop has a weird design that has sockets for 4 pins that you see in the laptop connector. Beware trying to plug it in any way other than the flat surface up – you could blow out a fuse, or worse, damage your laptop!
All in all, I feel I have gotten back my whole money’s worth already. Since my professional life revolves around this laptop, the only thing I can ask for is that this machine be as reliable & long-lasting as my veteran Satellite. Hats off to Toshiba for once again delivering a solid product that’s worth every dime & then some.

this is a great laptop, especially for moderate users. My personal issues with this laptop:
-the backspace button squeaks. Probably a unique problem.. sorta funny as well.
-all of the ports are very close together, besides 3 of the 4 USB ports. The VGA out, ethernet port, the HDMI out, the sleep/charge USB/eSATA, the firewire port, the audio in/out, and the expresscard port are all so close that using them all at the same time might be problematic.
-my laptop came with a faulty firewire port, so be sure to test all of the ports on the unit before your warranty expires. Once again, might be unique, but it is worth testing. I bought a expresscard Firewire port to override the issue for now, and am about to send the laptop back to Toshiba for the warranty-covered service.
Otherwise, this is a great laptop. The fullsize keyboard is nice, however I will still use a regular one while at home via USB.. the numpad is also very convenient. The laptop does (expected) get fairly warm when running hardware-intensive programs (CS5, for example), so consider a nice cooling fan unit with this purchase.
EDIT: One other thing. The battery onboard is not meant to be disconnected from the power source for more than an hour.. I am definitely going to purchase the 12-cell that Toshiba sells for 0 to extend this time. Be prepared to lug around the power cables wherever you go if you don’t..
The only other complaint would be that dust and fingerprints show very easily on the surface.. but no biggie for me!
p.s.: the firewire port on this laptop is NOT the fullsize 6-pin firewire, but instead the (I believe it is called 4-pin) miniDV size. This may be a good or bad thing for some users, but cables that go from 4 to 6 pin are readily available… it was just a surprise to me that wasn’t listed in the tech specs.

I purchased this laptop 2 months ago and I am very much satisfied. My primary purpose is to put VMware on it, run SAP BI & Oracle Apps on Windows 2000 (on VM) along with some database, and also run some reporting tools. So I needed good RAM and good power. Yes, this delivered that power. Boot time is very good. Lovely design. Big screen, very good to watch movies, as this is a multimedia screen. It has full keyboard(with numeric pad)! For some reason, I feel the volume of speakers seems adequate for a laptop. It’s not bad at all. I used variety of laptops till now (official ones though), and this has comparatively more or less the same volume.
Why 4 *s? Coming to that, this came with 500 gig disk and that’s not partitioned. The Windows partitioning tool didn’t compress it to beyond 212 gig. But I wanted to keep about 50 gig for OS and rest into 2 partitions. I am not interested in using any 3rd party tools to partition while OS is already installed. I don’t want to risk the time at this point. Probably I’ll try out when I have 3-4 days free time.
By looking at the images, one may feel that the body cover is not glossy. But it is. Finger prints are very evident. Same on screen (but we’re not supposed to put our hands on the screen). I am a lazy guy, so can’t keep wiping it wet tissue all the time. I will do it once in a while.
But otherwise, this is a great piece. Backed by Toshiba’s reliability. And this has international warranty too. The price has gone up in 2 weeks, and what I observed is this particular model is not widely available in outside market, but it’s sibling ES5037 does. I think I got a great deal at right time.
I have a suggestion for people who want to use this one on their laps. It becomes very hot quickly, so it’s good to keep it in such a way that the air vents are not blocked at bottom and side. You might need a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I bought this laptop to replace my Toshiba Tecra. My Tecra was slow, crashed frequently, and became almost unusable when paired with my kaspersky Internet Security. Because of my experiences with that computer I was hesitant to try another Toshiba but was convinved by both the specs and the affordability of this model.
I must say I was completely, pleasantly surprised by how great the Satellite is! This computer is lightening fast. I am actually finding myself annoyed by the slowness of my desktop computer now, which is an extremely expensive computer. It downloads my audio files in record time and uploads my mp4 files to youtube in less than half the time I have been accuostomed to. I am a transcriptionist and find the keyboard to be very comfortable and efficient for long periods of typing. The screen is very clear and crisp. HD appears great on it.
Probably one of my favorite things about it is the Windows 7. I, like most people, have been extremely dissapointed in Windows Vista and had really high hopes that 7 would be an improvement. Windows 7 has exceeded my expectations in every way! I quite often have many windows open at one time and switch back and forth to research the topics I’m writing about and review instructions that have been sent to me via email. The Windows 7 allows you to view in small or full size every Window you have open without actually navigating away from the Window you’re currently working on. This has been extremely helpful to me. Everything about Windows 7 has been functional and intuitive and has helped to make me even more productive. I cannot say enough good things about Windows 7 or the Toshiba Satellite. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fast, affordable, functional laptop.

I used to have a much older model Toshiba Satellite (Cannot remember the model number off the top of my head). I later gave it to my nephew and purchased an Acer Apire One, which after about a year of use (gentle use at that) it ceased to function at all. The time then came for me to shop around and with me not being much of a Mac person, I settled on this laptop after looking at other brands all over.
I am very pleased with the construction and performance of this laptop. The battery life I find is adequate (I do web surfing, reports, and photo editing), all which lasts me roughly at least 4.5-5 hours. The Eco-friendly feature is very intuitive since it saves battery life dramatically when you turn this on. Screen is very easy to read, keyboard is good enough to use.
My only slight complaint is the speakers, they aren’t the best, however they are not bad by any means, a tad quiet if you will. However if you plug in headphones in (I have headphones that cover over your entire ear), and voila, the Dolby Advanced Audio really kicks in!
I do recommend this laptop, it’s not too heavy, and it is very well rounded. I’ve owned it for about a week thus far and have absolutely no regrets purchasing it.
