My wife received a Toshiba Satellite laptop as a hand-me-down gift a few years ago. This laptop is now about eight years old and wearing out, so for her birthday this year I researched economically priced laptops and was very pleased one of her best options turned out to be this Toshiba Satellite (L675D-S7014, to be exact).
I located this laptop new for a really low price that just crested the 0 mark. I was unable to locate a new laptop with 17.3″ monitor, dual core, and 4Gb of memory for this price. Needless to say, I snapped it up and gave it to her for her birthday.
She squealed with delight when she opened it! She immediately took it out of the box and admired its beauty. It looks modern and sleek and while it’s actually a large computer, it’s not overly heavy. Her old 17″ square-monitor laptop was at least 15 lbs. This 17.3″ is under 10 lbs. In the past she would never use the laptop on her lap on our couch. It was just too heavy and hot. Now she does. The bottom of the laptop never gets past being warm and the laptop itself is very light compared to her old one.
Setup was as simple as turning on the laptop and walking through some questions. Upon its first power on, it installed and activated the OS build with only a few questions. Windows 7 is so simple to get started, but if you have a wireless LAN setup, make sure you have the wireless activation key. Windows will ask for this when installing the OS. Within maybe 10 minutes after power up she was on our wireless network Facebooking, e-mailing, and so happily working away. I couldn’t be happier with this laptop.
Really the only improvement I would suggest would be the sound quality of the speakers, but this is a nit. Really, for the price, this is a great laptop. The sound is in stereo with ample volume, but it’s a little tinny. I really have no reason to complain. It’s such a nice laptop, speedy, and has just the right amount of memory for everything she does. I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a low-priced, new laptop at a budget price.
In fact, I’m looking at one of the 18.4″ Toshiba laptops for myself. I’m so impressed with this one and the robust performance of her last Toshiba Satellite, which lasted eight years, I think I’ll get myself a Toshiba when I’m ready to retire my current Lenovo. For the price, you gotta love it!

Model purchased: A73jh-A2
Ownership period: One week
Other laptops that were being considered: Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q880, Alienware M17x, 17″ MacBook Pro
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
This is a one-week review of the A73jh-A2 laptop that I recently purchased from The Price Pros via Amazon.com. The shipping was stellar, receiving the machine only 4 days after I ordered it (Standard Ground Shipping). Upon arrival, I unboxed everything and set up the laptop. As mentioned in other reviews, there definitely is a lot unnecessary bloatware on the machine, but with a half hour and a little bit of patience, that can be removed quite easily.
The hard drives are partitioned in a rather non-traditional way with two partitions on each disc (4 partitions total). I was going to reformat these partitions but I really didn’t see the need. I use the C Drive for the OS and basic software programs. I use the D Drive for games and higher-end software programs such as Adobe software and Autodesk software. The remaining two partitions (The E and F Drives) are primarily for documents and data. This works out for me but if you want to rearrange the hard discs it would be very simple.
At first, I was a little worried that there was a malfunction with the keyboard, as the backlit keyboard did not turn on after starting the computer up. However, I just needed to hit the FN+BACKLIGHT key to get that up and running. No problem there. The screen is absolutely gorgeous and when comparing it to my old 1280×800 resolution laptop, it just blows it out of the water with full 1080p resolution. I heard some negative reviews about the mouse pad and click buttons, however I don’t use these when I’m working/gaming so it really isn’t an issue. You do need to press down more that other machines to click the left and right mouse buttons on the machine though. As mentioned in other reviews, this laptop remains amazingly quite, a definite plus.
I was also concerned about the Bios version. I had read in many articles that upgrading the Bios from 206 to 209 was vital to fix many issues with the laptop. I was all prepared to flash the Bios, but when I checked the version it was already 209. However, if you receive a machine that has Bios version 206, use the Asus EasyFlash option to change it to 209. Do not use WinFlash, I hear it often results in errors.
I am still getting used to the chicklet keyboard, it’s a bit different for me. There is absolutely no lag with the keys as others have mentioned. That was fixed with Bios version 209. I’ve noticed that many people who post negative reviews about this machine either don’t know that much about computers to know how to simply fix the problems, or they don’t have the patience to do so. Like anything, it’s a product, and there are bound to be issues eventually. In the few cases where the machine doesn’t work correctly, it’s usually when someone doesn’t know how to properly flash the Bios, or the manufacturer shipped it with defective hardware. It doesn’t mean that Asus designed a poor machine; it just means that things happen. I’ve read so many reviews where someone sent it in for a repair because they didn’t know what they were doing, yet they report that it’s a horrible product. Ironic.
PERFORMANCE AND GAMING
As far as performance goes, this machine delivers in a big way. I primarily purchased this machine to play StarCraft II and to render animations in 3ds Max 2011. The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 is phenomenal. StarCraft II, Resident Evil 5, Dead Space, The Sims 3, BioShock II, Doom III, and Modern Warfare II all run on maximum settings with vertical sync and anti-aliasing (AA)at full 1080p native resolution at around 40-80fps. These can be increased by tweaking the AA settings. For StarCraft II fans, AA can be forced via the new Catalyst 10.7a Beta driver which is available for download on AMD’s website. This does however take a huge performance hit on your computer. I would suggest using 2x or 4x AA with StarCraft II to maintain playable frame rates.
While monitoring the RAM I noticed that it rarely ever goes about 35%. With full 8GB, I wouldn’t expect it to. The CPU with Turbo Boost technology is amazing, often boosting itself around 2.4Ghz when necessary, and even higher depending on what’s running. I have yet to use the overclock button, I’ve really had no need for it yet, but it is a cool concept. Core temperatures rarely ever go above 60C even when gaming, multitasking, and rendering (monitored using SpeedFan).
I decided to test out tessellation with DirectX11, so I installed Dirt 2. I can max out the settings and it looks absolutely gorgeous, with an average frame rate of 40fps. This gets me excited for future DirectX11 games and NextGen gaming in general!
NEGATIVE ASPECTS
The only downside I can think of is that it might be difficult to haul anywhere. I haven’t given that a go yet. Also, the rubber padding in front of the keyboard (where you rest your hands) does take wear easily, though it feels absolutely amazing. I used to be really anal about stuff like this when it came to laptops, but I guess the sheer power of this machine has distracted me from this minor setback. I suppose it can always be replaced if I were ever to sell this machine to a new owner, which I don’t intend on doing.
PERIPHERALS
I haven’t used the Asus backpack that it came with, but it looks very sold (built by Targus, a commendable brand). The ROG mouse is excellent, though I’ve hardly ever used the custom DPI settings. I’ve also ordered a non-silicon keyboard cover and gaming mousepad. Will report on those one I get them. The only concern that I have in the back of my mind with the cover is cooling issues, but I’ll address those when and if they occur.
CONCLUSION SO FAR
All in all, this is an excellent machine and the price is outstanding. The Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q880 had less RAM and a lower quality graphics card for around the same price. The Alienware M17x was a fine quality machine, but it was over ,000 more with matching specs (though it looks the coolest). The MacBook Pro wasn’t even a performance machine at all, even to match the specifications of the Asus, it would have cost me ,700 more for the MacBook Pro, and that’s excluding 500GB of HDD space. That being said, I am very happy with my decision and you should feel confident buying one for yourself too!

I’m a pretty seasoned computer user. I’ve been at it since about 1985 and have owned, built, configured and used dozens of computers over that period of time. Now, our office that runs several small businesses has four computers, and my Dell XPS M1530 is the replacement for a 6 year old Dell desktop that served flawlessly but was aging in performance. I did a lot of research before buying this one. My goal was to get a state-of-the-art laptop that would drive its own display alongside a 24″ main display. We have a lot of power glitches here in Hawaii, so the laptop’s built-in UPS capability was a big plus.
This computer did not disappoint. It has the 9300 CPU and is lightning fast for our memory-hog applications. OK, it had a flaw. About a week before the end of the warranty, the HD died. I called tech support, told them the error codes and they immediately confirmed that it was a bad HD and sent a replacement. I asked for some other brand of HD since this one had a known issue and that’s why Dell was so quick to acknowledge the need for a replacement. Unfortunately, all they could provide was another one of the same drive. So I ordered an upgrade online (hard drives are so cheap, why not?), and use their replacement in an external-drive enclosure for office backups and large transfers, and I installed the new drive in the XPS. I installed the image I had (of course) saved on our office backup drive, and was up and running in an hour. BTW, it takes about five minutes to replace a drive in this well-designed laptop. And that includes the time to find the screwdriver.
Since then, no problems, and the computer performs as it was intended to in the first place. For the occasional use in which I actually use it as a laptop, I love the keyboard feel and overall build quality. This may sound a bit weird from a guy who considers himself totally outside the realm of what is cool and what is not, but this laptop is the best looking rig there is. No doubt about it, the designers had it together on this one!
The slot-loading cd/dvd is terrific, the keypad is slick, the display is crisp and clear, and most importantly, the performance is the best of any computer we have ever had in our office. Even working it’s proverbial computer-butt off, it never runs anything but warm to the touch. This is in sharp contrast to many reviews that state hot-running as an issue. I understand the 9300 CPU has resolved much of this problem.
I gave it five stars only because Dell shipped it with a known HD defect and then refused to replace the drive with a different brand/model/whatever. The logic of that escapes me. For the last fifteen years or so, I have never had a complaint with Dell Tech Support. A caveat here, though, our support has always been from the business direction. I hear that the general consumer support isn’t that great. Next time you buy a Dell, try buying it as a business purchase.

Gaming notebook – are really suitable for games?
Sep 2nd
Despite the ever increasing demand and popularity of gaming laptops, there is still a question that you do not go away simply persistent. Gaming laptops are really suited for video games in the first place?
Many hard-core gamers still laugh at the idea of video games on a laptop. The two simply are not compatible, can not be calculated. They argue that a laptop is simply too small and too compact for useAll the heat — figuratively and literally physically.

I purchased this laptop 2 months ago and I am very much satisfied. My primary purpose is to put VMware on it, run SAP BI & Oracle Apps on Windows 2000 (on VM) along with some database, and also run some reporting tools. So I needed good RAM and good power. Yes, this delivered that power. Boot time is very good. Lovely design. Big screen, very good to watch movies, as this is a multimedia screen. It has full keyboard(with numeric pad)! For some reason, I feel the volume of speakers seems adequate for a laptop. It’s not bad at all. I used variety of laptops till now (official ones though), and this has comparatively more or less the same volume.
Why 4 *s? Coming to that, this came with 500 gig disk and that’s not partitioned. The Windows partitioning tool didn’t compress it to beyond 212 gig. But I wanted to keep about 50 gig for OS and rest into 2 partitions. I am not interested in using any 3rd party tools to partition while OS is already installed. I don’t want to risk the time at this point. Probably I’ll try out when I have 3-4 days free time.
By looking at the images, one may feel that the body cover is not glossy. But it is. Finger prints are very evident. Same on screen (but we’re not supposed to put our hands on the screen). I am a lazy guy, so can’t keep wiping it wet tissue all the time. I will do it once in a while.
But otherwise, this is a great piece. Backed by Toshiba’s reliability. And this has international warranty too. The price has gone up in 2 weeks, and what I observed is this particular model is not widely available in outside market, but it’s sibling ES5037 does. I think I got a great deal at right time.
I have a suggestion for people who want to use this one on their laps. It becomes very hot quickly, so it’s good to keep it in such a way that the air vents are not blocked at bottom and side. You might need a wireless keyboard and mouse.
